A brief introduction to alanjack.co.uk

It occurs to me that if anyone reads this, they might wonder 2 things:

1. Who is this grumpy bitter husk of a man?

2. Why does he have a website?

and

3. Why should I care what he has to say?

The least I can do with this site is provide you with the most basic of answers, so here goes.

The bitter husk of a gamer that runs this site (when he can find time between his job, university, saving the world, nursing wounded kittens back to health, and NOT performing top-secret missions for the British government) is a young (relatively speaking) man named Alan Jack. He's an alright bloke really - a bit odd at times, a bit cynical at times and a bit self-deprecating, but generally worth having around - or, at least, he'd like to think so.

He like creating things, though he tends to think he's rarely any good at the important bits - Jack of all trades, as they say, master of none. He knows a bit of Flash Actionscript programming, but not enough to make anything that doesn't crash now and again. He spent a summer teaching himself to use PHP and MySQL, but isn't too good at making sensible, secure code (which resulted in the loss of his entire database a year or two ago, and he's never really got back into web design since). He's really good with Photoshop, but never seems to find a use for it (besides humorously doctoring photos and making the odd poster). He can also edit video well (but isn't much of a cameraman and doesn't want to go to film school) and can make cool DVDs with customised menus and stuff. Recently, he's learnt to use XNA, and that looks like it might lead to a couple games, but nothing that would be completely stable without being tidied up by a specialised coder.

He's also done a bit of writing in his time, though he tends to throw things out after a while, and now doesn't have much more to his name beyond the bad play he wrote last summer that he doesn't really think people want to see.

As such, he tends to think of himself as more of an ideas man - not always just his own ideas, but a man for sounding ideas off, always able to find a new angle to look at things. This led him to Abertay University, where he's studying Games Production Management.

As for why he has a website, it all began as a way for him to play with his PHP and MySQL skills. He's kept it on and off since then, and its served numerous purposes - an online CV, a sketch pad of ideas, and at one point even the diary of a man slowly unravelling and wondering where his life has gone. Now, it serves as something between those, collating creative works from my accounts on other sites with the blog from my Bebo page, and this main blog. At some point, my games will be available here, along with some type of CV-ish thing.

And as for why you should care? Well, he's not any more important than anyone else, but he likes to think his combination of some rather unique life experiences with a predilection for thinking differently about things makes him someone that's sometimes quite interesting, and worth listening to. Other times, he's an idiot who its fun to argue with, especially since he doesn't take offence to people contradicting him, as long as they don't take offence to him calling them a cock.

Also, his mum doesn't know he uses language like that. So please don't tell her.
